5 Ways to Reboot Your Creative Practice and Upgrade Your Winter
Winter comes as no surprise every year, and for most of my life that arrival’s been accompanied by various forms of dread. But a few years ago I learned about a Danish and Nordic concept that inspired and challenged me to change my mindset.
The concept was hygge (pronounced hoo-gah), a curious word with no direct English translation. Since the Danish are famously some of the happiest people in the world, I had a feeling they knew a thing or two about thriving in the midst of a cold and long winter.
When you break it down, hygge is all about a conscious appreciation for slowing down and enjoying the simple, charming, and cozy things in life. The definitions are vast, but everyone can agree that hygge is all about a special feeling, a natural extension that anyone can incorporate into their daily life.
When you resist the dread and appreciate the regenerative energy winter brings, it can be a powerful time of year to reboot your life and your creative practice. Here are six simple ways to get your hygge on.
1. Cozy up your atmosphere
Now’s the time to create some seriously cozy vibes. Whether it’s a designated nook, or your entire living space — bring on the comfort! Super soft blankets and pillows and flickering candles are essential go-tos. Elevate your senses with essential oils and fresh winter greenery. Turn up your favorite playlist or give this one a listen. Shifting your usual living space layout around is a great way to gain new perspective. Never underestimate the power of your space and its influence on your mood.
2. Embrace a new hot beverage
There’s a special sense of daily ritual that comes along with brewing a special cup of something in your favorite mug. Now’s the perfect time to branch out from your standard coffee or tea. From mulled wine to golden milk, Pinterest can lead you down an endless rabbit hole of boundless options to experiment with. Savor the preparation and every sip as a way to ground yourself before any tasks the day brings.
3. Be present
Two simple words that can be a bit tricky in practice, being present is a core value of the hygge way. So turn off your phone, put on your favorite fuzzy socks, and take a moment to be hypnotized by the steam coming out of that big mug of hot cocoa you just made. This is also a great time to resurrect or start a gratitude journal. Make note of the little things that bring you joy.
4. Amp up your self-care
You are the expert of you! So take a moment to ask yourself what loving things you can do to support yourself this winter. It’s a great time of year to add a hot bath to your weekly routine. Bust out that face mask that’s been sitting in your medicine cabinet. Throw on some silky pjs and drink more water.
5. Foster togetherness
Cherishing social connection is another huge hygge principle. Seize the season and create a new tradition with friends and family. Create a cooking club or go sledding. Bing a Netflix series with your BFF. Sky’s the limit. Explore what kinship means to you and think about how you can add more of it to your life. Feeling warm and fuzzy yet?
